EU scrap prices stay stable
13. 1. 2009
Because of a tight supply the scrap prices look to remain unchanged in Europe this month. Economic and financial situation have cut a range of activities generating new scrap – e.g. steelmaking industry and old scrap – e.g. demolition or disuse of goods such as automobiles.
The reason for drop of scrap collection is also low margin in comparison with the recent years.
Traders and mills in Germany and France say that January prices and demand will be without changes according to December. Spanish traders said they expect January to be a quiet month due to “very limited” purchasing by steel mills. In the UK only the Celsa plant in Cardiff may buy significant quantities of scrap this month because of the cutbacks in steel production across the country. According to Corus market sources will refrain from purchasing scrap for the third consecutive month due to lower production and its ability to generate enough scrap internally.
